Why Girona as your next cycling destination?

If you're looking for the perfect cycling destination, Girona is a must-see! The city and its surrounding region are popular with both amateurs and many professional cyclists! Here, cycling is part of everyday life, and it's impossible to travel a few meters without encountering a cyclist.

Girona offers an exceptional setting, combining pristine roads, varied landscapes, and terrain suitable for all levels. Whether you're a road, gravel, or mountain bike enthusiast, you'll find routes here to suit your needs. From pristine asphalt roads and gravel paths through fields and forests to mountainous or even maritime landscapes, there's something for everyone.

Another important point, which is becoming rare these days, is that you'll be surprised by the respect shown by motorists towards cyclists. There's no doubt that the 1.5m distance will be respected and that they'll wait for the right moment to overtake!

The city is full of specialty shops and cycling cafes where you can connect with other enthusiasts. Cycling passion at its peak!

Beyond cycling, Girona is a destination that captivates with its rich heritage. Its old town, with its picturesque streets and historic architecture, is a real pleasure to explore. The surrounding area is no exception: between charming villages and its proximity to the Costa Brava, there are plenty of opportunities for discovery.

Plenty to keep you busy on your off days. And don't neglect them; they're just as important as the days spent in the saddle!

Spain and Catalonia are also known for their gastronomy and affordable prices. Girona is no exception; you'll find plenty of restaurants and grocery stores sure to delight your palate. We can already see you coming back with your ham under your arm.

Finally, with a wide range of accommodation, Girona is an accessible and pleasant destination.

Whether you're a seasoned cyclist or just an amateur, you'll find everything you need for an unforgettable experience on two wheels here!

When is the best time to go riding in Girona?

Catalonia is synonymous with warmth and mild temperatures year-round. It's no secret that this is one of the reasons why so many professional cyclists and triathletes choose to settle there.

Girona is one of the perfect destinations for the shoulder season. Not to mention the almost constant sunshine throughout the year, you'll find spring-like temperatures between 15 and 25°C during the months of March-April and October-November.

In winter, the temperature very rarely drops below 10°C, this can be one of the solutions to find mild temperatures and escape the sometimes very cold winter!

Summer is for those who don't mind the heat! But with so many options to choose from, from the forest to the nearby sea, you'll always find a way to cool things down.

Our favorite routes!

Besides wanting to show you all the advantages of this region, the main idea of this blog article is to share our favorite routes with you!

Whether on road or gravel, here is a selection of 4 routes that will delight you!

And since we know that you are also big coffee lovers, we have chosen to start each outing with a “coffee stop”, in particularly iconic places!

Route - El Angels

We all know that car travel can be particularly long and unrefreshing! The day after such a journey, we often prefer to take a rather short outing, to get a feel for the place and not to put too much strain on the body! This one ticks all those boxes!

Coffee start - Espresso Mafia: a must-see for coffee lovers, you won't be the only cyclist sitting around an Espresso, cappuccino and cinnamon Rolls!

After this caffeine and carbohydrate boost, it's time to hop on your bike. Head south, out of the city and onto the region's beautiful hilly roads. The first climb comes after 10km and is a welcome warm-up. You'll be on the bike for 5km, with an average gradient of 4%, to reach the switchback at Santa Pellaia.

This is followed by a descent to reach the beautiful village of Sant Sadurní de l'Heura. Take the time to stop and explore the medieval streets by bike, a truly exotic experience.

Now for the second climb of the outing, the Els Angles! This is Girona's iconic climb (in both directions). Same story, you can show off your climbing skills on a superb, little-traveled road, where you'll be more likely to encounter a professional cyclist than a car. At the summit is the El Angels sanctuary, a place of pilgrimage and stargazing.

Now all that's left is to head down towards Girona. The road consists of a series of bends through the forest, without a single bump!

Gravel - Sea Otter inspired route

The first outing was rather short, now it's time for a more demanding course. And for that, we're changing bikes: wider frame, thicker tires, no doubt about it, we're on a gravel bike.

Coffee start - The Factory: second must-see place in Girona, whether for coffee or for these delicious dishes and pastries! Little tip, you can just as easily go there before your outing for a hearty breakfast, or upon your return for a well-deserved meal! Whether on the steps or at the table, there's no doubt that you'll want to come back every day!

Girona rhymes with Gravel! And here, we're talking "real" gravel, on rolling trails, crossing forests, and hills, without missing your mountain bike left at home.

Today's route is inspired by the legendary Sea Otter Europe race! Head north of Girona, then head east toward the coast. The first 60km are very smooth; you'll be surprised to ride at over 30km/h on incredible gravel tracks through fields and wooded areas. Be careful, it's easy to get carried away by the speed: save your energy, as the challenges are coming.

If you feel the need, don't hesitate to refuel in Palafruell, the last town where you can stock up on supplies. The last 60km are much more complicated: it's simple: you take on the 1,700m elevation gain on this section, alternating between ascent and descent. Nothing insurmountable, but there's no doubt it will leave its mark.

You'll be amazed by the landscapes you encounter in the Gavarres massif, with its sea views and endless forests. A final, rather steep descent will bring you back to Girona and the asphalt, for a well-deserved meal and rest!

90% gravel tracks, compared to only 10% asphalt, what more could you ask for?

Gravel - For a more accessible route, or when you have less time

No need to set off on 100km trails to have fun in Girona! This is one of the main advantages of this region: the trails reach right into the city, and you'll soon be alone, traversing the trails of your dreams.

Head west of Girona for this alternative, a slightly lesser-known spot. The main challenges are in the middle of the route, with a good number of steep climbs, where you'll find yourself at the end of your saddle, straining on your handlebars! Again, nothing insurmountable, as the route remains very smooth!

Route - Sant Hilari
