My impact on the Eco Score
Let's discover together how every choice, from transport to washing, influences the carbon footprint of our products and how, as consumers, you can make a difference.
3.1 Analysis and impact of scores
Common misconception alert: Transportation isn't necessarily the biggest polluter! In fact, Ecobalyse provides us with a detailed score across several categories, from product use to end-of-life, including transportation. The overall score for our Altitude jersey, for example, can be broken down to analyze the impact of each stage of the product's lifecycle. "Use" represents 33.08% of its carbon footprint, while "transport" accounts for only 0.99%. This result is explained by the fact that our jersey is made in France, thus reducing the carbon footprint associated with transportation. However, the frequency of washing the product, which is part of its use, has a significant impact on its final carbon footprint. Ultimately, it's the product's use that pollutes more than transportation in the case of our Altitude jersey.
Alert #2: The choice of raw materials and the processing of products are the two other steps that most significantly impact the final carbon footprint. This observation therefore confirms our choices regarding raw materials. Indeed, we strive to prioritize recycled materials such as polyester sourced from Europe, or raw materials produced in France according to precise ethical and environmental criteria.
3.2 Why do I have an impact (positive and negative)?
Enough about us, what also matters is how you consume. At Matchy, our products are designed to last and be durable. Therefore, caring for your cycling shorts or jersey is essential. Washing cycling shorts, for example, isn't necessary after every ride.
Alert #3 : And yes, just because you don't wash your cycling shorts after your ride around the lake doesn't make you a slob. It's actually better to hand wash them or, if you do machine wash them, wash them inside out and in a mesh bag. These details help improve the durability of your cycling gear and therefore minimize its overall environmental impact.
The results obtained with Ecobalyse reinforce our choice to favor French and Italian production, which allows us to prioritize short supply chains and drastically reduce the carbon footprint associated with transportation. Indeed, producing in France means contributing to job creation in the textile industry, benefiting from a less polluting production process than in other countries that use coal, for example, all while guaranteeing ethical production that respects the workforce and its expertise. Therefore, when you choose a Matchy jersey made in France or Italy, you are not only supporting our brand, but also an entire French production system characterized by its expertise.
